Camping on the Beach at North Padre Island

Travel, Videos — By Nicole on April 12, 2009

Last weekend David and I decided to finally make our way to the ocean. I don’t know what took us so long since we only live 2 hours away from it! My previous experiences of swimming in the Atlantic were both cold and brief but we happily found that the waves pummeling our bodies were quite warm. It was ridiculously windy (from what I understand this is not unusual of the region and makes it a big windsurfing spot) and the air was crazy humid.  My fingertips were pruney all day and my glasses were constantly fogging up… and my hair oh Jesus my poor hair. These two aspects of the trip did not make for an ideal camping scenario. However, this did not interfere with the appeal of sleeping 50 ft from the water and grilling yummy food on a beach. Yes I crunched sand in my teeth but it was fucking delicious! All in all it was super fun, however next time I think we will make it a day trip rather than endure sand in the tent and the long walk to the washroom at night, hoping you wouldn’t run into a rattlesnake.

I wish I could go there, you guys know how to live. I like David’s big stick with nails in it.

  2. Troy says:

I agree… that was a good snake killin stick

  3. Eleanor says:

I bet there was a lot of sand in that tent! Who got the job of shaking that out?

  4. Roger says:

I sooooooooo wanna go back to Corpus!!! I miss the Bayfront.

I think our tent is currently molding in the garage…oops

  6. Tamara says:

It looked nice, but you guys seemed like the only people staying on the beach. Was everyone else more reasonable with respect to the rattlesnake warnings? All those holes in the sand looked very sketchy.

  7. David says:

There were a couple of other tents on the beach, but it was mostly seniors in RVs in the parking lot, ‘South Padre’ is apparently the less windy and more popular side of the island, so everyone goes there instead, but we like the big waves. But yeah, i’m sure the snake holes scare off more sensible people.
