Our New Weber Grill

One of the best things about Laredo Texas is having weather that lets us barbeque outside every month of the year without having to shovel snow. There’s not much better then relaxing outside with a beer while tending to a fire. Lately we’ve also been experimenting with smoking, which can dramatically enhance the flavour of almost everything and it’s pretty interesting to play around with which types of wood pair well with different types of meat. Basically everything about grilling is fun!
Since moving to Texas we’ve been getting by with our lovely little Weber Smokey Joe which — amongst portable grills — with it’s 14.5 Inch surface is a nice size, but for everyday use and indirect cooking (where you only can use half of the grill) we definitely needed something bigger. Nicole and I both agreed we’d like to stick with a charcoal grill (for the flavour) and with Weber (for the build quality), so we went with Weber’s 22.5 Inch One-Touch Gold. I can see why in cold places like Canada most people seem to use gas grills, but when its warm enough outside that you can take time to have fun starting coals in a Charcoal Chimney with some newspaper and matches, then I think Charcoal is the way to go.
After having cooked with our new One-Touch Gold for a few weeks now, I can happily say this is the perfect grill for us. The new Weber is huge compared to our old one and is perfectly designed for indirect cooking — the hinged cooking grate is awesome, since it lets you easily add more coals or wood when you’re cooking for hours. A couple of the other useful features are the nice big ash collector and one-touch cleaning mechanism. We paid ten dollars extra for the beautiful blue colour and I think it was worth it. The only thing strangely missing is a temperature gauge, which we’ll be purchasing soon as an add-on. Our little Smokey Joe isn’t about to go into retirement either, we still use it for small things like burgers and like to take it camping with us.

You guys making cake of the product placement or wha..?
ps, miss you guys!
Dear Weber, please send me a free apron or a thousand dollars.
Darlings! Just been catching up on your blog–it’s fabulous, you guys look great, and I’m now quite hungry in spite of just having had dim sum with Josef and my mom. Salmon with fresh sorrel sauce (from Mom’s garden) for dinner tonight. Hugs,L
I would do very bad things to get to eat dim sum! So jealous! Your dinner sounds awesome — I have never had sorrel. I picture it being swiss chard-ish??
No dim sum in Texas?? But us pesky Chinese are EVERYWHERE!
Haha sorry to be misleading–there are dim sum spots all over Texas…except in Laredo. booooooooooo
Webers are the best for BBq’in whole turkeys. You have the perfect grill for adding your coals on the side if needed. Pile coals up on each side (kingsford is a must as it will last) have a drip pan in the middle. That’s it about 2 to 3 hours you will never want oven cooked turkey again. Indirect heat makes it work.
