Winter Road Trip – Part One: West Coast USA

Travel, Videos — By David on January 18, 2010

For this year’s Christmas vacation, rather than flying, we decided to do a big road trip up the West Coast from Texas to Canada. This meant by the time we finally circled back home to Laredo we had spent over a hundred hours on the highway. During the past three summers we’ve been doing similar — although shorter — U.S. to Canada drives; so along with the motivational power of Bob Seger’s greatest hits, our tolerance for double digit hours in the car each day has thankfully become fairly high. This video covers the first half of our trip, as we drove from Laredo to Tuscon and then spent a couple nights each in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland — before making our way up to Canada for a Christmas at Nicole’s sister’s place in Vancouver (Part Two: Canada will be up next).

  1. Looks like a wonderful trip. I live in Austin now, but I’m from California. Besides missing family in CA, I definitely miss In-N-Out and San Francisco!

Wow! Jack-in-the-Box! Really? That is the most horrid food I’ve seen you two eat.

I’m looking forward to Part 2.

  2. Caitlin says:

Wow, epic trip! When you plan this type of vacation, is it largely based around restaurants you want to visit? Do you make reservations before you even leave? Do you take turns driving?

    • David says:

First we pick the cities we want to go to, then we research the restaurants we want to eat at. And yes, before we leave we make dinner reservations if we can. For lunch we usually don’t have reservations unless we just made them the day-of or night-before kind of thing. I do all the driving:)

  3. Wow! What a whirlwind of a trip! How many pounds did you gain? You guys ate soooo abundantly! In&Out Animal style, Carls Jr–11courses at Coi and my favorites in Portland Beast and Clyde Common! I mean I guess the chinups and arm wrestling counts as exercising! If you ever hit up NY– let me know!

    • Nicole says:

Haha the foie gras definitely does add up…o well there is just a little bit more of us to love to now!

I had read on your blog about your visit to Portland and that was one of the reasons we decided to check out Clyde Common! Thanks!

  4. Veronica M. says:

$400 for dinner? OMgosh, only in my wildest dreams! I always imagine your job entails lots of math & science and maybe computers, David. I’m I close? :) Do you have any sponsors through this blog that help pay for your meals during trips? That would be sweet!

    • David says:

haha, in order to eat big on vacation we save our pennies by missing out on things like cable tv. You’re right though, a sponsor definitely would be sweet!

  5. Zhang says:

Great vid as always. Wow $400 for a dinner… must have been good lol.
Also, that last song in the background in the vid (MINMI – Who’s Theme) – great choice. Are one of you two a Samurai Champloo fan by any chance?

  6. ++MIRA++ says:

omigosh…i loveeee roadtrips but never have time for them! looks like a blast and alot of yummy food.

ive always wanted to do the tasting menu at alinea in chicago! my only problem is i only eat hallal/kosher meat and its so hard to be picky with a tasting menu.lol.

    looks like it was fun!

  7. Raquel says:

I’m so impressed by your video editing — which one of you does it? How’d you learn to get so good at that! What program do you use? ohhhh so many questions. I’ve visited Coi before too; skimped on the wine pairing, but it was d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s albeit uppity. Glad you guys enjoyed your trip!

    • David says:

Thanks! I just use iMovie to edit all of our videos; it’s super simple to use. There’s really not much to it besides drag, drop and crop, so it’s something you can learn just by playing around with it basically.

  8. amy says:

I saw that you missed Chris Consentino’s restaurant in San Fran!

    Love your mini vids.

    • Nicole says:

We were actually planning on going to his restaurant but somehow we both totally forgot about it when we got there! We will just have to go back!
