Winter Road Trip – Part Two: Canada

Travel, Videos — By Nicole on January 25, 2010

David and I spent Christmas with my family all squeezed into my sister Kathleen and her husband George’s cozy Vancouver apartment.  My Mom has always been an adventurous cook so it was a lot of fun watching her tackle Julia Child’s pastry wrapped duck (she was inspired watching Julie & Julia).  Christmas is the only time I feel any connection to my half Ukrainian heritage because my mom makes the best perogies in the world (and I’ll fight anyone who says differently).  We then took off to spend New Year’s with David’s family in Edmonton and enjoyed some Lebanese dishes like Fatayer and German style ones like Steak Tartare.

This is probably my favorite video you’ve posted, probably b/c I’m sentimental and love seeing families get together and enjoying one another’s company. I especially loved the sledding! Kudos to Nicole’s Mom for pulling off that pastry-wrapped duck. That looked like some serious in-depth prep work!!

  3. Ryan says:

The perogies I make are stuffed with potato and cheese, then tossed in butter and onions. Is this the authenticate way to make them?

    • Nicole says:

There are a bunch of different kinds of perogies–my favourites are potato and cottage cheese, and also sauerkraut with bacon. I feel hungry thinking about them. My family never does the onion thing but I can’t speak for real Ukrainians—we are Canadian. :)

    • Ryan says:

I never thought about making them like that… I’ll make sure to give them a try!

    Awesome trip.

I always wondered what you guys do for a living. :)

    Nicole,
Devoting your life to mole would be a pretty happy life!!!! Yummy! If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend trying the Pipian Verde. I’ve been a chocolate mole girl ever since my first bite, but the green stuff may have converted me.

I’m making mozzarella from scratch tonight with some friends. Cross your fingers it turns out…

I hope you’re enjoying more fabulous food adventures. I love your photos and all the beautiful food in them!

The duck-en-croute making was hysterical, especially the part where mom beat up the pastry.

I just dug the last of the Christmas perogies – vareniki! – out of the freezer last night. I think that it made me, temporarily, a very good wife :-)

  7. Mom says:

I loved the video; especially the compliment on my perogies! Love, Mom
