Frito Pie

Videos — By David on February 16, 2010

One of our favourite food discoveries since moving down South is Frito Pie. We’re not sure why it has the name, but the recipe basically consists of Frito corn chips, melted cheese, and any type of chili. You just combine them all, usually in the chip bag itself, and then top with pickled jalepenos for a perfectly gluttonous dish. For our homemade version of Frito Pie we went with a chedder beer sauce and a Rick Bayless inspired Texas chili.

  1. OMG. This is so Texas. We used to have that for lunch all the time in public school! Welcome to The Lone Star State!

  2. Zack says:

This reminded me of nachos! Love the cheddar beer sauce and the salad. Keep on trying stuff out guys! Still trying to find some Huitlacoche in Vancouver.

  3. Caitlin says:

Oh, seriously? Droooooling all the way through that video. Thanks guys!

Hey guys! Huge fan here in Alberta! Love everything you do and can’t wait for your next video! You both inspire me to be more adventurous in my culinary adventures! Loved your road trip up the coast!

Nicole, thanks for the flashback…….we have matching swimming badges!!!!

Just wanted to say Thanks! You guys Rock!

Leave it to you guys to make an involved Frito Pie! When I think of Frito Pie, it’s canned chili on top of Fritos with the Velveeta concoction David probably had in mind. Which is why I’ve never made it–it seems like such trash. You guys made it seem like a proper dinner and now I wanna make some myself. I do love them–just usually only at the ball game or fair.

  6. leslie says:

The high school that I went to used to have a similar treat during football games called nachos in a bag. Same concept except they would open a fun back of Fritos and dump the rest in. MMMM delicious.

  7. Barr says:

How awesome does that chili look! Really must try that version. As far as Frito® pie goes, I’ve seen it in northern Missouri! Congrats on yet another brilliant dish!

  10. Troy says:

I could fuck up a frito pie right about now! yum!!

  11. Kristina says:

You haven’t had a proper Frito pie until you have eaten it at James Coney Island in Houston. :) But ya’ll’s looks nice too lol.

Real Texan’s usually don’t make their own chili for Frito pie. We usually just use Wolf brand :)

  12. ++MIRA++ says:

ive never heard of this, so it reallllly must be a texan thang.

it kinda confuses me, in a good way, i think? lol

  15. Crystal says:

Mmmmm, Frito Pie! We ate the out-of-the-bag version in the junior high cafeteria all the time. And then we got creative and had Cheetoh-pie, and Cool-Ranch-Dorito-pie, and Funyon-pie… we were gross. :)

    • David says:

haha, Cheetoh Pie sounds amazing! Nicole had never even tried Funyons before, until a couple of weeks ago when we bought some to use as a fried onion replacement on a green bean dish, it was pretty good actually :)
